Theaimoftheprojectistodevelopaprecisegeneticanalysistooltodiagnoseseverediseases.Theideaistodevelopamolecularsignaturetestoverthenextfiveyearsthatwouldenabledoctorstoquicklydeterminewhetherapatient’sincreasedtemperatureiscausedbyaninfectionandwhethertheinfectioniscausedbyavirusorbacteria.Doctorshavingaccesstosuchatoolwoulddrasticallyimprovethespeedatwhichillnessesarediagnosedandtreatmentoptionsdevelopedincasesofsepsis,meningitis,andotherpotentiallylife-threateningdiseases.

Thecurrentroadtoadiagnosisforpatientsadmittedtothehospitalwithafevercanbelongandwinding–doctorsdoseveralbloodanalysesormighteventakecerebrospinalfluidsamples,ororderMRIandCTscans.Oftendoctorsprescribeantibiotictherapiesbasedonasuspectedbacterialinfection.Suchtherapiesare,however,ineffectiveiftheinfectioniscausedbyavirus.Ifdevelopingthisnewdiagnostictestingtoolissuccessful,itwouldbepossibletosavedaysorevenweeks,aswellasconsiderablefinancialmeans,indeterminingaprecisediagnosis.
目前,对于发烧入院的患者进行诊断的道路漫长而曲折——医生需进行多次血液分析,甚至可能需要采集脑脊液样本,或者进行核磁共振和CT扫描。通常,医生会根据疑似细菌感染的症状进行抗生素疗法。但是如果病人的感染是由病毒引起的,那么这种疗法将是无效的。如果成功开发出这种新的诊断测试工具,则可以节省数天甚至数周的时间,并节省大量金钱做出精确的病情诊断。
